May 1 International Workers' Day was declared at the Second International Congress in 1889 and has been celebrated worldwide since 1890. Long banned in Turkey, May 1 celebrations were officially recognized as a public holiday under the name 'Labour and Solidarity Day' by Law No. 5892 of April 22, 2009. The first official celebration took place on May 1, 2009 at Taksim Square, Istanbul.
