On the night of July 15, 2016, in commemoration of the public resistance against the coup attempt in Turkey and defense of democracy, July 15 was declared a public holiday under the name 'Democracy and National Unity Day' by Law No. 7034 of July 10, 2017. It is the newest official public holiday of the Republic of Turkey.
