On April 23, 1920, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) opened in Ankara. This date symbolizes the founding of the first parliament representing the national will. By Law No. 1 of 1921, April 23 was declared the 'National Sovereignty Day'. In 1929, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk dedicated this holiday to the children of the world — taking its current name 'National Sovereignty and Children's Day'.
