New Year's Day was officially declared a public holiday in Turkey in 1935 by Law No. 2739. The Public Holidays Act No. 2429 of 1981 reorganized all public holidays. Celebrating the transition to the new year, January 1 is a holiday for all government institutions across Turkey.
